Hospitality Night Falls on The Village's Middle Weekend, Not Its Opening One

Most people in downtown Laguna Beach treat the first Friday in December as the night the holidays begin here. Hospitality Night fills Forest Avenue, Santa arrives at the Peppertree Lot, the tree goes up at 6:10 p.m., and for a few hours the whole grid between Ocean Avenue and Glenneyre feels like the season just started.

It didn't just start. By the time Hospitality Night happens on Friday, December 4, 2026, the town's other holiday tradition, Winter Fantasy at the Sawdust Art Festival grounds, will already be two full weekends into its run. It opens November 20 and closes December 20, running Fridays through Sundays for five straight weekends up Laguna Canyon Road. Do the math on those dates and Hospitality Night doesn't kick off the season. It lands almost exactly on the middle weekend of a five-weekend event that started earlier and keeps going two weeks after downtown's big night is over.

Winter Fantasy Opens First, Up the Canyon

Winter Fantasy runs at the Sawdust grounds at 935 Laguna Canyon Road, the same eucalyptus-shaded site that hosts the summer art festival, reconfigured for the season with three entertainment stages, glassblowing demonstrations, a petting zoo, falling snow, carolers, and photos with Santa. It's a ticketed event, distinct from anything downtown, and it runs only on weekends: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from November 20 through December 20.

That means the first two weekends of the holiday season in Laguna Beach, November 20 to 22 and November 27 to 29, belong entirely to the canyon. Nothing downtown marks the start of the season during those weeks. If a resident is waiting for Hospitality Night to feel like the holidays have arrived, they've already let two weekends of Winter Fantasy pass without much notice.

Hospitality Night Follows, and It's Free

Hospitality Night is the one night the city and the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce run together downtown, and unlike Winter Fantasy, there's no admission. The 2026 schedule starts at the Peppertree Lot, officially Lot 2 at 322 Forest Avenue, where Santa arrives before the tree lighting at 6:10 p.m. The lineup around it includes the Laguna Beach Presbyterian Art Market, La Playa Tamales, homemade cookies and cider, and caroling from 5 to 7 p.m., a set from Ukulele Academy in the Peppertree Lot, the Laguna Community Concert and Jazz Band following the tree lighting, an Anneliese School performance on the Forest Avenue main stage, and live sets from Susannah B & the Lowkeys and Earl Thomas closing out the night.

Street closures begin at 3 p.m., covering portions of Forest Avenue, Ocean Avenue, Beach Street, and Glenneyre, along with the Peppertree Parking Lot itself. Anyone driving into the Village that afternoon should plan to be parked well before then. The event itself runs from roughly 5 to 9 p.m., a single night, free to attend, built entirely around the downtown blocks.

The contrast isn't just geography. One is a paid, multi-weekend art market run by a nonprofit festival organization. The other is a single free night run by the city and its chamber of commerce. They share a season and a few miles of Laguna Canyon Road, but they don't share a calendar, an operator, or a business model.

Why the Overlap Only Happens Once

Here's the part that's easy to miss if you've only ever thought of these as two separate holiday events rather than one shared calendar. Winter Fantasy runs five weekends: November 20-22, 27-29, December 4-6, 11-13, and 18-20. Hospitality Night falls on December 4, which is the opening night of that third weekend, the exact midpoint of Winter Fantasy's run.

That means there's only one night all season when both events are technically live at the same time, and it happens to be the same night. Every other weekend of Winter Fantasy, including its first two and its final two, runs with nothing competing for attention downtown. A resident who treats Hospitality Night as the season's starting gun is arriving right at the middle of the other event's run, not its beginning, and is skipping the two weekends on either end where the canyon has the season mostly to itself.

What This Means for Planning a Visit

If the goal is to actually catch both without one crowding out the other, the trick isn't picking a single night. It's picking two separate outings on purpose.

The first two weekends of Winter Fantasy, before Hospitality Night happens, are the quietest version of the canyon event all season. No downtown street closures competing for parking, no citywide crowd pulling attention toward Forest Avenue. A Sunday afternoon on November 22 or November 29 gets the full Winter Fantasy experience, glassblowing demonstrations and all, without any of it feeling squeezed against a bigger downtown night.

Hospitality Night itself works best treated as its own trip. Given the 3 p.m. street closures on Forest, Ocean, Beach, and Glenneyre, arriving early and parking outside that footprint before walking in is the more reliable option than trying to drive into the closure zone as the 6:10 p.m. tree lighting approaches.

After December 4, Winter Fantasy still has two more weekends on the calendar, December 11-13 and December 18-20, with the crowds and the downtown competition gone. That back half of the run is where the canyon reclaims the season entirely, right up until Winter Fantasy closes on December 20, a full two weeks after Hospitality Night wrapped for the year.

The Village's Season Has a Shape, Not Just a Start Date

None of this changes what either event actually is. Winter Fantasy is still the same holiday art market it's been for decades, and Hospitality Night is still the same one-night block party built around the Peppertree Lot tree lighting. What changes is how a resident times a visit to either one. The season in the Village doesn't open with a single night downtown. It opens quietly in the canyon two weekends earlier, peaks on the one night both events happen to share, and closes out with two more weekends up Laguna Canyon Road that most people have already stopped paying attention to by then.

Knowing that shape, rather than just the two headline dates, is what separates a resident who happens to catch Hospitality Night every year from one who's actually experienced the full five weekends this town sets aside for the season.
